Welcome to St. John the Evangelist

November 2015

Dear Parishioners:

I wanted to give some exciting news about developments in the parish concerning our mission to serve the poor of our community. As you may know, the Society of St. Vincent DePaul at St. John’s has a long history of providing emergency assistance to those in the parish and the community at large. Over the last year, I have encouraged the members of the parish who are called to this ministry to grow the Society and expand its efforts. I am happy to report that membership has grown, and we are ready to expand our programs.

In the weeks and months to come, the St. Vincent DePaul Society will begin to develop a comprehensive service program for the community. We envision hour emergency food relief, clothing assistance, energy subsides and rent assistance, among other services. As it will be privately funded, no government certification or registration will be required, as is the case with many existing services in the city. It is a big mission, but the need is great, albeit largely invisible.

We will need space to accomplish our mission, space that is accessible and secure. As I am sure you are aware, the Lambertville Food Pantry, for the last 34 years, has worked out of our garage area. They provide a very valuable service to the community, and have extremely dedicated volunteer staff. But, as they have expressed often over the years, the space is not adequate for their needs. Since there are large groups that come at specific hours, along with the staff, the space is hot in the summer and cold in the winter, and too small. It is not safe to have people lined up on the alley, a public street.

In order to reconcile this situation, we have asked the Food Pantry to begin the process of looking for a new space. We have not given them a specific time line. Change is never easy, but as the head of the DVIC said recently, “in the long run, things will be much better than they are.”

We have the same hopeful outlook. Most importantly, in the end, St. Vincent DePaul will fill the gaps that exist in the community. When the Food Pantry relocates, St. Vincent DePaul will fill the existing space with goods to provide the service we envision. As the relationship will be personal and, importantly, anonymous, the space is perfect for that need.

In this Year of Mercy, let us all put our shoulders to the stone and help those who are in need.

As Pope Francis has said “Helping the hungry should be done out of love: both the love of God and the love for one another”.

With Prayers,

Fr. Robert
